The ten blunders of public speaking

Updated: Jun 23, 2023

Poor preparation is an inexcusable blunder that no public speaker should commit. The ten other blunders to avoid are:

  • Exceeding the allotted time

  • Speakers focusing on themselves

  • Reading from a power point or notes at the cost of eye contact

  • Starting with a joke or quote which is irrelevant

  • Trying to handle too much material in too little time

  • Giving wrong statistics and information

  • Handling the Q & A’s poorly

  • Reacting to the audience instead of responding

  • Ending the speech abruptly without a sense of conclusion

  • Poor or no audience analysis
